Skill specialisations
3D Character and Creature Art
I have been working in 3D for 3 years now and over that time my skills have improved significantly. My low-poly base meshes using the 3D program Silo are my strongest skill because my speed at completing them has increased dramatically on each project; also my understanding of topology and anatomy has increased thanks to my research skills.
Over this past year I have been learning to High-Poly sculpt and Polypaint Zbrush 3.1. I chose this program of others such as Mudbox because of how much time I would save during my final project. One of my main focuses when working on a project is making sure I have enough time to complete all the requirements on the brief to a high standard, this means I have to be realistic about my ideas and targets.
During my time on the FDA and BA GAD courses I have learnt the basics in Rigging and Weight painting, Concept painting using Adobe Photoshop and Texturing.
Research
I was taught how to research in 2005 and have been conducting research for my college and university projects for the past 5 years. I feel that research is an integral part to any artistic endeavour because without a thorough and concise research an idea can suffer, especially if it’s based in the real world.
I try to look for research in many different places. During FMPA1 I decided to get into contact with a palaeontologist and a famous dinosaur artist to get some thoughts and advise about key points of creating my own prehistoric creature.
I use both primary and secondary research to get a balanced and broad overview of my chosen subject; I try to also research the techniques and practises that I will need for the technical aspects of a project.
Further skills
Before on settling on 3D Art within Games Art and Design I had already completed a GNVQ Art Design course, BTEC National Diploma in Graphic Design and I had done two night classes in Photoshop and 3D Studio Max.
I have a broad knowledge of Art and Design practises and techniques which I still use today. For example I still use Adobe Illustrator and Indesign which I used as part of my graphic course when presenting work on the games course.
